Medieval Charnel House at St Brides This Church in Fleet Street in London originates from Roman times. Professor Gerald Conlogue spends his day in the crypt examining the human remains to determine the official cause of death. The photo is from the charnel house crypt which is home to over 7,000 bones most of which are arranged into piles.

Cross Bones Graveyard In medieval times this site was the unconsecrated graveyard for prostitutes. By the 18th centaury it had become a pauper's burial ground. Friends of Cross Bones are striving to transform it into a garden of remembrance and open it to the public. For more information and to sign the petition. |

The Highgate Vampire From the late 1960's the cemetery gave rise to a number of supernatural sighting. Occultists and vandals decided this was the place to hang out. The two main characters in this drama are David Farrant and Seán Manchester who took it upon themselves to rid us of this menace. "Credo Qvia Impossibile" |

Victorian Post-Mortem photography With the cost of portraiture deceasing it became popular for the Victorians to memorialize dead loved ones. Today this seems morbid but it was often the only photograph taken and kept by family as a keepsake. Some went one step further and had the body embalmed, especially with children, then dressed them in their clothes. Some web sites on this subject have items for sale. Ana Maria Pacheco My favorite sculpturer. Her work explores control and abuse of power. Best known exhibitions are Dark Night of the Soul (shown here) The Banquet Man and his Sheep Exercising of Power Acrobats |
Body Snatching Grave robbing became pretty popular in the 1800's due to a shortage of cadavers. The most famous of them all were two Irish lads by the names of Burke and Hare. Ironically Burke himself ended up on the slab to be dissected. His body is still on display today. Copyright Alan Wilson |

The Sedlec Ossuary (bone church)
Situated in the Czech Republic. The bones from people who died in the black death and Hussite wars were exhumed and a half blind monk given the enviable task of decorating the chapel! Interesting stuff.
